ESCAPED

Imagine the life of a girl who has seen all the shores of death during her captivity by the beasts of the so-called Islamic State. These zealots do not recognize her ancient Yazidi religion and thus rationalized enslaving her and her kin to satisfy their sadistic hedonism and evil impulses. Think about that a moment: "slaves." It's not a figurative term. It is literal bondage: humans as cattle bought and sold, forced to perform demeaning work, tortured, and raped at will.

LOST CHILDHOOD

Children of war zones are the most victimized. They do not only lose their rightful childhood years, but the suffering they endure is abhorrent. Many are orphaned after having witnessed their fathers and brothers slaughtered and their sisters and mothers raped and tortured. Those in captivity are then brainwashed in special Islamic schools to become the new generation of jihadists. Those who are saved live a life of trauma in the camps and are in dire need of love, care and rehabilitation.

LIFE IN LIMBO

All minority ethnic and faith groups where targeted by ISIS, but the Yazidi Kurds received the worst blow - savagery of genocidal proportion. The survivors are now living under harsh conditions in makeshift camps, left to grieve over their lost loved ones.

The shock of it all is that not only foreign jihadists, but their own neighbors turned on them. Would they ever be able to return to their homes and live alongside those who killed their men and raped their women? Would they ever recover the trauma? Or would they be forgotten and be left to their grievances when the world's attention moves elsewhere?
